Posts should be meaningful and engaging; it’s equally important they’re accessible.

Take a look at my breakdown of an Instagram post:

What Works?

  • Video with sound- multiple sensory ways to engage with the post

  • Descriptive Text- helpful for those looking for a quick summary, plus an added level of engagement

  • Hashtags Properly Capitalized: When you don’t capitalize the first letter of each word in a hashtag, people with visual impairment who use screen readers can’t hear the hashtags read back properly. Instead it sounds like a string of mush. #CapitalizeYourFirstLetters

What’s Missing?

  • A descriptive caption describing what an image or video looks like and what’s happening: Describing your images in the post and/or in the alt text gives more access to those with visual impairment.

  • Video captioning- a high percentage of users watch IG videos with the sound turned off. Although sound makes the post more meaningful for some, others who watch with sound off will appreciate the captions. Captioning also makes the post more accessible to those with hearing impairment.
